Bright mid-cerise in colour with a complex bouquet of rich red fruit and well integrated oak compliment a well structured, dusty black cassis infused mid-weight palate framed in persistent, fine-grained French oak tannins. The balanced mouth feel and overallstructure of this cool climate Cabernet Sauvignon will provide enjoyment well into the medium term.

Hand-picked, destemmed, matured for 30 months in French hogsheads (30% new). Good colour; there's a persistent stream of savoury tannins running through the palate, adding to bay leaf notes alongside blackcurrant fruit. The jury is out on those tannins.

The fruit for this wine is sourced from SA125 clone in the House Block at front of the cellar door and the G9V3 component comes from the mid-slopes of the Maurice vineyard between the Pinot Noir and the Merlot Noir. This gives us two different aspects and two different clones with which to play, and as you all know, we like playing. The soils are slightly different with the SA125 planted over deeper red friable clay loams and the G9V3 on better drained gravely Easterly traprocks and limestone lenses. It all adds interest to this wine which will continue to surprise for many years as it matures in your cellar.

Vintage Conditions

The 2013 growing season was very strange indeed. An early budburst following a warm (for Bloodwood) and dry Winter followed on to a dry Spring and hot early summer which hurried the maturation of the fruit along. Even though we experienced  a record daily rainfall of 110 mm on 1st March, the excellent drainage and windy, warm conditions which followed over the following three weeks meant this Cabernet Sauvignon was picked in excellent condition on the 21st March, barely a month after we began vintage with the Pinot Noir.



As I’ve outlined elsewhere, we believe in macro‑oxygenation during the early fermentation process here at Bloodwood. And this wine is no exception. The home vineyard fruit was hand plunged with plenty of air in an open fermenter, whilst the G9V3 vineyard in the Maurice block was treated in the usual manner. A high proportion of uncrushed berries are a constant in all our red ferments, and regular splash pumping over helps bring the tannins into shape early in the winemaking process. The wine spent 30 months in a mix of new and older French oak hogsheads before sterile filtration and bottling in October 2015.
