2009 Pinot Noir
Vineyard
The Pinot Noir from Bloodwood is grown on the top 12 rows of the Maurice Vineyard.. Yes we know that’s a bit confusing given that the Maurice is a style of wine which isn’t necessarily tied to a particular plot of ground..but..bear with me. The original few rows planted in 1984 were, and are to be found in the middle of our original Cabernet planting. We were anxious to see how the fruit performed without any special Pinophiliac attention. It did very well, so the next five rows were planted at the very top of the Maurice vineyard block. Both plantings were to MV6 clone, however we now have, in addition a hundred or so each of clones 777; 114 and 115.adjoining the Maurice vineyard. These vines are all close planted on an easterly slope of 20 degrees in a north/south orientation and Scott-Henry trellised to open to the western side of the vine. This gives a bit of added light and warmth to the ripening grapes in cooler years.
Vintage Conditions
Orange in 2009 was a very good place to grow grapes and pinot Noir is no exception. What can we say..the fruit was all sound and perfectly ripe with great natural fruit/acid balance. A colder than usual winter with fair rainfall and several snow falls led into a calm and gently warm spring and summer bringing the fruit to perfection a little earlier than usual on the 2nd March. We’d very much like to see another vintage at Bloodwood like 2009.
Winemaking
For details of this wine you need look no further than the styles section of our site. Because of the very small quantity (normally no more than 500 litres) produced from the vineyard, we consider ourselves lucky to make two barrels of Pinot noir each vintage. 2009 provided one 300 litre hogshead and 150 litres of topping material. As a consequence, there is little room to engage in any fancy wine making or blending with Bloodwood Pinot Noir. The grapes were de-stemmed cold soaked and open fermented under natural yeasts with regular gentle hand plunging. The pressed wine was transferred warm to barrel where it finished malo-lactic conversion, and after 6 months in barrel, (literally) it was bench trialled and sterile filtered into bottle in January 2010.

Tasting Notes
This perfumed, hand crafted Pinot Noir with its subdued sanguine hues and charming cherry blossom aromas entices you into a beguiling and gently delicious blood plum rich world couched in subtle barrel ferment char. Those ladies old handbags are slinking about the palate again, complementing the delicate tannins and distinguished bouquet of this fine wine.
What Other People Say (of our previous 2006 release)

Having recently enjoyed a private tasting at Bloodwood with owner Rhonda Doyle I got to try the vast majority of the current Bloodwood range. While nearly all of the wines I tasted that day where enjoyable the fact that the 2006 Pinot Noir was in such limited supply we where not able to try it in our tasting I had no hesitation in buying a bottle to take home.
This Pinot Noir is very good and one of the most subtle wines I have ever had the pleasure of trying. It's strangely more enjoyable in smaller sips and is so easy drinking that you can really stretch out the enjoyment of this wine by going slow, one small sip at a time. It is also rather dark in colour for a Pinot Noir and has a nice aroma.
My only complaint is not of the wine itself but the tasting note on the label itself and I quote, "Those ladies old handbags are slinking about the palate again, complementing the delicate tannins" Given the choice of hitting up my local bingo night to lick a few old dearies handbags or sit down and slowly sip a Bloodwood Pinot I'll take the latter any day!
Mr Halliday’s review of 2009 Bloodwood Pinot Noir
Bright and clear colour; spice and plum are the hallmarks of bouquet and palate alike, with a firm, savoury finish lending a certain austerity. It's not ladies' old handbags, but old ladies handbags. Screwcap. 13.5% alc. Rating 89 Drink 2014
